Solan District came into existence at the time of the reorganisation of the districts of the State on Ist September, 1972. The District was carved out of Solan and Arki tehsils of the then Mahasu district and tehsils of Kandaghat and Nalagarh of the then Shimla District. Administratively, the district is divided into four Sub-division viz. Solan comprising of Solan and Kasauli tehsils, Nalagarh covers the juridisdiction of Arki and Kandaghat Sub-divisions covers their respective tehsils. The total geographical area of the district according to the Surveyour General of India is 1,936 sq. km. which constitutes 3.49 percent of the total area of the State and ranks 9th amongst the district. Solan a name derived from the name of Goddess Shoolini Devi, with the grace of blessing’s of the Goddess, it has become the fast progressive town of Himachal Pradesh. Solan town is an important hill Resort of Himachal Pradesh, it is also called the Mushroom city of India. Solan is also widely known worldwide for Brewery which was established during British Rule. Due to fast growing Pharmaceutical industries, the Solan has also made a name in a field of medicines, throughout India and abroad. Solan town enjoys to be a District Head quarter. The Municipal Council came in existence in the year 1950.The area of this Municipal Council is 618Hec and having 13 wards. The population of this as per census 2011 is 37935 and floating population is about 35,000. The town is having high growth rate of Urban population for the last 20-25 years. At Present New Council came into existence in the year 2010 having President, Vice President &13 Elected Councilor and 3 nominated Councilors.
